Question by Lulus Momma: Loaned a car to my dad – is it bad to ask for it back?

I had 3 cars. One was my SUV that was primarily what I used for road trips when I took my dog. I had a little Nissan for local errands and I had a sonata for driving to work. It was my ‘nice’ car without dog hair.
My niece needed a car. At first I was going to give her the Nissan but it had a car payment on it and everyone was working to try to get her a car without a car payment. At the time my niece was a senior in high school and was only making an hour as a cashier and worked about 20 hours a week.
My dog had died.
So my dad made a joke and said ‘you could let me have your SUV and I could give her my Kia” So I said OK. The SUV didn’t have a car payment and it was still pretty new and only had 70,000 miles on it. His Kia didn’t have a car payment either so when he gave it to the niece she got a car without a car payment. Well 2 months of her having the Kia – it clunkered out and was in the shop for a month and no one could fix it. So to make a long story short, she now has my Nissan. I paid it off.
When I gave the SUV to my dad I laid down some ‘rules’ as in 1. you can’t sell it, 2. you can’t trade it in on another car and 3. Mom can’t smoke in it in case I get it back I want it to be a smoke free car.
So now 2 years has passed. I want to get another dog. I don’t want the dog in my only remaining car – the nice car.
Since my dad has had the benefit of using a car without any payments for 2 years – would it be bad to tell him I want it back?
My parents have 2 other cars – a Toyota Corolla (my mom’s work car) and a BMW z4 – my mom’s pleasure car.

And for the record, my mom regularly drives the SUV and smokes in it all the time.

I miss the SUV – we took it on a family trip to St. Louis in August and I said I missed my SUV.

Given they never paid me a penny and I did set the expectation that I might want it back at some time – would it be bad to tell them I now want it back?

I gave them the car within a month of my dog dying and I did it because in my mental state I just thought I didn’t need a dog car – and I was trying to help fix a family situation so my niece could have a way to work.

Its your car, so why shouldn’t you ask for it back?
