Is a Porsche 914 (circa 1973) a decent car?

Question by Horseshoe Rapids: Is a Porsche 914 (circa 1973) a decent car?

My dad bought a 914 a few years ago and has been restoring it plus rebuilding and beefing up the engine (I think he said it has 130 hp right now (I think the original had like 80 hp)) with a curb weight of just over a ton). A friend of mine who doesn’t like old cars and only cares about new ones said it was a “poor man’s Porsche” and pretty much a piece of sh*t. He has a VW R32 he’s always bragging about, and while it may be faster than my dad’s, it’s also 1,000-1,500 lbs heavier. I don’t really care if my dad’s car can beat my friends, but I want to know if my dad’s car is really that bad, or if my friend is simply prejudiced.

I haven’t driven either car (yet)…I think (hope!) my dad’s is a standard shift (I can’t remember). My friend’s R32 is an automatic since he’s a paraplegic, but to me, an automatic shift pretty much takes the fun out of driving no matter how powerful the car is.

You are correct. The 914 was and is still a great car. It is because as you say, it was so light.
It also has incredible balance, because the engine weight is right in the middle.
What was the best car of all time, in my opinion, was the Porsche 914/6. They only made a thousand or so, but that was about the fastest street car anyone would ever want. Originals are very expensive, but not impossible to make from a 4. Hardest would be the wheel well flair. But they are available as a kit.

  2. The 914 is mid-engine which is the perfect balanced set-up for optimum handling. Because the weight is behind you in the 914 makes the front end light. No power robbing power steering or power brakes needed. You can squeeze a small child in the middle between the buckets. The fuel injection, if you still have it installed just need replacement of the any rubber hoses because when they get old, they let air in and the 914 will run rough. Overall the car is durable and will reward you in the resale department, that is if you get into it.

why do you keep spamming this question under different names? Are you some kind of mental defective? You ask this like every week or so, and it gets answered. Seriously dude, get a hobby and a life.
